About Us

Who We Are

Get Real is America’s first grassroots platform.

Get Real is fiscally sponsored by a 501(c)(3) on a mission to build America’s first digital, grassroots newsroom that works for communities and provides trustworthy, accurate information to its citizens.

By bringing together communities, independent journalists, content creators, and community leaders, Get Real believes we can fill the gaps left by shuttered local newspapers.

Get Real creates local news hubs on social media filled with credible, accurate information made for today’s audience and presented in ways they want to consume it, delivered by voices they trust.

Think of us as a bridge connecting hometown messengers with verified facts about stuff that’s relevant to your life and your community.

By building outside of paywalls and partnering with the best local newsrooms, we will make quality information accessible to all Americans by bringing the best reporting to their favorite social platforms.

We’re piloting our first creator, community and journalist newsroom in Pennsylvania. Check us out on TikTok (@pennsylvaniareals) and Instagram (@pennsylvania_reals).

We work with community messengers to understand the issues they personally care about and help them deliver newsy content that aligns with their interests. This ensures content relevance and authenticity, making the content more engaging for the creators and their existing networks. Creators are paid industry standard rates for paid collaborations.

Editorial Standards

At Get Real, we believe trust is earned, story by story.

Get Real creates factual, nonpartisan, and community-based news and information designed for social-first audiences. Our goal is to make complex issues clear, accessible, and shareable, with a focus on your community, and what matters to you.

All Get Real content is approved by multiple layers of professional journalists. We prioritize accuracy, fairness, independence, and accountability.

Sourcing and Fact-Checking

Audience trust is paramount to Get Real. We promise to always provide original sourcing of where we got our information. We only rely on credible, verifiable sources you can check yourself, including:

  • Links to trusted news partners and organizations

  • Primary documents

  • Interviews with subject-matter experts

Every post is reviewed for factual accuracy before publication.

Corrections Policy

If we make a mistake, we own it – and we correct it, promptly and transparently.

Corrections are acknowledged on the platform where the error occurred, and updated versions of content reflect the accurate information. See a potential error? Please contact us directly on our social media sites or at info@getrealnews.org and let us know.

Creator Vetting and Training

Get Real works with creators who live in, and are a part of, the communities they cover.

Creators are vetted for credibility, audience trust, and alignment with our editorial values. All creators receive guidance on journalistic standards, sourcing expectations, and best practices before publishing to Get Real and partner accounts.

Transparency, Independence, Funding and Support

All editorial decisions are made independently and are never influenced by funders or advertisers.

Get Real is supported through a mix of grants and philanthropic funding. Funders do not review, approve, or influence editorial content.

Partner Newsrooms and Shared Standards

We collaborate with nonprofit and local newsrooms to expand the reach of their reporting through social media.

All partner content must meet established journalistic standards, including factchecking, sourcing, and editorial independence, before getting published. We credit partner newsrooms prominently and link audiences back to original reporting whenever possible.

Quality

We prioritize basic civics and amplify the best journalism necessary to maintain an enlightened citizenry. At a time when quality news is becoming harder and costlier to access, we will make it accessible to all people, regardless of literacy or geography. Our team distills the nation’s best hometown and national news into short, engaging social media videos delivered via proven channels including Facebook, Instagram and Tik Tok.

Accountability

Journalism needs to share information across multiple platforms. It needs to engage the public to counter the depiction of journalists as alien elites, and it needs to prioritize issues of real consequence, civics and investigations into stuff that impacts their lives — directly – not the horserace and low-value information based on access to power.

Editorial Independence

Get Real is an independent, nonpartisan news organization committed to fact-based journalism that is free from outside influence and adheres to the highest standards of transparency. We retain full authority over content and maintain a firewall between news coverage decisions and all sources of revenue. We accept gifts, grants and sponsorships from individuals and organizations for the general support of our activities. We will accept anonymous donations for general support only if it is clear that sufficient safeguards have been put into place that the expenditure of that donation is made independently by our organization and in compliance with the Institute for Nonprofit News Membership Standards. We do not accept donations from sources that present a conflict of interest or compromise our independence.
